Blood, Sweat and Tears

Makes you think twice about the Gulf Wonder...

Comments:
My father was one of these people when he went to Saudi Arabia more than 30 years ago. Luckily for him, he had a 2-year bachelor's degree that proved to be valuable. He still started out as a porter at one of the airports. He went on to assume the top grade (position) any Pakistani could get. (They have/had different grades for different nationalities/races. White folks generally get higher starting salaries and maximum salaries and there are limits to what you can possibly make.)

This is about the time when they said that a man who served 20 years in Saudi Arabia, oil-rich as it was/is, didn't need to work another day for the rest of his life. My father tested this theory by retiring early and moved to Pakistan, but then after 12 years he was forced to invest and start managing a business. Now he works everyday (family business).

Things are much worse now. My uncle (mother's brother) went to Saudi Arabia about ten years ago and he is a doctor (MBBS). I have many tales of the hardships even he had to suffer but things are much stable for him now because his wife (also a doctor) joined him and started working.

The way I see it, the corporates, entrepreneurs, the corporations exploit low-class workers as much as they can. The Middle East is only good if you have a business plan in your pocket and a thirst for money.
